The 2022 Shito-ryu National Championship and Workshop is a significant event on the association’s calendar for the year as it is an event all clubs and practitioners of the Shito-ryu style of Karate in Nigeria look forward to, given the opportunity it affords them to commune, interact, and test their skills with their peers from across the country. This year’s event would have as special guest, Hanshi Patrice Bai (8th Dan), President, World Shito-Ryu Karate Federation – Africa from Cote D’Ivoire, steering the workshops and chairing the championships, as hosted by Hanshi Lucky Ebunu (8th Dan) President, Shito-ryu Karate Association of Nigeria (SKAN).
The highly revered guest would be attending and teaching at the workshop in furtherance of the relationship between the Shito-ryu Karate Association of Nigeria and the World Shito-ryu Karate Federation (WSKF), to which SKAN is affiliated and under whose auspices the esteemed guest would be visiting.
The championship and workshop will hold at the Indoor Sports Hall, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos from 12th to 15th May 2022 (8am – 5pm each day), with the workshop serving as a master class for all black belt Karate practitioners from all over the country, irrespective of style, while the championship would be open to all members across different age categories to compete for the available medals. The championship would also prove a veritable site for the association’s newly trained referees to practice their newly learnt skills. In all, the event proves to be a valuable capacity building experience for practitioners of one of the leading Karate styles in Nigeria.
The event is hosted by Shito-Ryu Karate Association of Nigeria, in association with the Karate Federation of Nigeria and the World Shito-Ryu Karate Federation.
In furthering our core objectives for deepening the practice of Karate in Nigeria and the Shito-Ryu Style in particular, SKAN is organizing a National Basic Karate Instructors & Referees Course for its members from the 18 to the 20th of March 2022.
Scheduled to hold at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, the two courses have been packaged to improve the capacity of practicing members of the association by strengthening those who function as or intend to function instructors, teaching at clubs at both state run and private dojos, and also to increase the cadre of trained referees within the membership of the association.
SKAN held a successful seminar concluded with Black Belt grading in January 2020.
From 7th - 8th June 2014, in association with the Karate Federation of Nigeria and with support from the Lagos State Sports Council, SKAN hosted Sensei Wim Tewinkel (6th Dan Shitoryu, 2nd Dan Kobudo and international coordinator for Shitoryu Seikokai International) for combined workshops involving basics and advanced katas and an all female championship. Sensei Tewinkel was gracious enough to squeeze in an extra day on the 9th to carry out grading for interested black belters and a special introductory class on Kobudo (weapons training) before leaving for Canada.
With thanks to Sensei Ezekiah, the KFN and all Karatekas that put in the effort to make Sensei Tewinkel's visit a success in 2014.
